Recently, I was curious to learn that the show was being resurrected for Netflix and, like many nostalgia addled ‘90s kids, decided to revisit the series to see if it held up. Of course, I haven’t actually watched it for like, gulp, twenty years or something… I recalled a show filled with innuendos that I might not have gotten at the time but seem playfully clever now, along with a satirical depiction of modern American daily life. I definitely have warm memories of watching Rocko’s Modern Life on Nickelodeon during those summer vacations when my parents would splurge on cable for a couple of months. Now to find the old 90's Rocko's Modern Life comics, which I'm sure would be a thousand times better.I honestly can't recommend the book to any Rocko's Modern Life fan, or to any kid who grew up with 90's Nickelodeon shows period. It only gets points from me for being Rocko's Modern Life, a cartoon which will always have a place in my heart, and for, as I mentioned above, keeping in-line with how the show was drawn. There's really not a whole lot I can say about the book, except that it's altogether unengaging. None of the storylines are particularly memorable, and it's just.not interesting. Ever have something you wish would be left in its original style, and giving it an updated look would just ruin it? That's how I feel about this book. Oddly, this doesn't bother me with, say, the Batman Beyond 2.0 comics, but that's probably because it doesn't give off the.updated vibe I get reading this.

It's kind of distracting from the dialogue, and is almost hard on the eyes. While it remains faithful to the original show's art style (albeit with a more contemporary feel, which detracts from the nostalgia value I'd hoped it would have), it just strikes me as kind of all over the place - you know, like too much in a single panel. My biggest problem with the series is the art. And for how much I love Rocko's Modern Life, I found myself quite sorely disappointed. I was fairly strapped for cash at the time I saw it, so I decided to look up the comic online. So then, when I saw this book in a comic shop one day, I thus learned of the comic series' existence. Of course that wouldn't be an issue in today's world, since finding episodes to watch free online is stupid easy, but I still remember the heartbreak of my favorite TV show going off the air, even after all these years - something today's kids will never know. Especially when considering what replaced it (on the TV network I had, mind you - I'm in Canada), which if I remember correctly, was the Flipper TV series. I loved the characters, the animation, the voices.I loved everything about the show, and I'm not ashamed to say I cried like a baby when it was taken off the air. When I was a young child, it was my absolute, number one favorite cartoon.
